In 2026 the show was 9 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, billed as “4th on the First” and part of the city’s Hoover Salutes 250 lineup for the nation’s 250th birthday. Hoover Salutes 250
The 2026 show sat inside a week of patriotic events on the city’s Hoover Salutes 250 page:
- Sunday, June 28: a “Hamilton” sing-along at the Library Theatre.
- Monday, June 29, and Thursday, July 2: preschool patriotic crafts in the Hoover Public Library Children’s Department.
- Tuesday, June 30: an American Girl doll celebration at the library.
- Wednesday, July 1: the fireworks at the Hoover Met.
- Thursday, July 2: a USO swing dance at the Hoover Senior Center, which sold out.
Where to watch
The show is fired at the Hoover Met Complex on Stadium Trace Parkway, home of Hoover Metropolitan Stadium, the Finley Center and the city’s sports fields. The city had not published a parking plan or viewing areas for 2026 when we checked; we will add them for 2027 when the city posts them. Fireworks at home: what the new ordinance allows
The City Council rewrote Hoover’s fireworks rules on Sept. 28, 2026, in Ordinance 26-2713, which took effect on adoption. Under it:
- Still banned without a city permit, except at a permitted public display: firecrackers, skyrockets and bottle rockets, Roman candles, reloadable shells, aerial devices, audible ground devices and anything that detonates or explodes.
- Allowed only during the state’s fireworks seasons: novelties (party poppers, snappers, toy smoke devices, snakes, glow worms, wire sparklers and dipped sticks) and non-aerial, non-explosive sparkling devices, such as handheld or ground fountains with no more than 75 grams of compound per tube.
- No sales to anyone under 18, and buyers can be asked for a driver’s license or other ID. Retailers need a city seasonal permit.
- No igniting fireworks within 600 feet of a church, hospital, school or enclosed building, or within 200 feet of where fireworks are stored or sold, and never from or into a car or toward people.
- The fire chief or fire marshal can suspend outdoor use of sparklers and novelties in a drought or other dangerous conditions; using them after a warning during a suspension is unlawful, and they can be seized.
Violations are misdemeanors, and each day counts as a separate offense. The Hoover Fire Marshal’s Office page, last updated before the new ordinance, still says consumer fireworks are not permitted; call the office at 205-444-7655 with questions. The rules cover the Jefferson County and Shelby County parts of the city.
Open burning is also banned in Hoover from May 1 to Oct. 31, so the Fourth of July always falls in the no-burn season. From Nov. 1 to April 30, burning is allowed only with a permit from the Fire Marshal’s Office, the department says.
Rules differ just outside the city. If you live in unincorporated Jefferson County or Shelby County, or in a neighboring city, check with that fire department before you buy.
Safety
- Leave aerial and exploding fireworks to the professionals.
- Bring water and a flashlight for the walk back to the car, and agree on a meeting place with children before the crowd moves.
- Pets are often frightened by fireworks; keep them inside on show night.
- For an emergency at the show, call 911.
