Outage alerts

Customers can sign up for outage alerts by text, email or phone. Alerts tell you when there is an outage at your address and when power is expected back. Alabama Power says alerts do not arrive the moment the power goes out, estimated restoration times can change as crews find the damage, and if you get a “restored” alert while your power is still out, you should report it again.

How power is restored

After a storm, Alabama Power says it works in this order, according to its restoration page:

  1. Safety and damage assessment, including clearing downed lines in public areas.
  2. Transmission lines and substations, the backbone that feeds large areas.
  3. Main distribution lines along main roads that feed neighborhoods, schools and businesses.
  4. Smaller lines and individual services.

It restores power first to vital community services, including hospitals, emergency and public safety services and water and sewage stations, and to repairs that bring back the greatest number of customers in the least time.

Streetlights

The City of Hoover does not maintain streetlights in residential neighborhoods or private commercial developments. For those, note the pole number and call your homeowners association or Alabama Power at 1-800-245-2244. The city maintains lights only on major roads, including the I-65 and I-459 interchanges, U.S. 31 from Riverchase Parkway to Southland Drive, Highway 150 from U.S. 31 to Ross Bridge Parkway, Lorna Road, Galleria Boulevard and Municipal Drive. Report those to Hoover Engineering at 205-444-7529 or through MyHooverConnect, according to the city’s Street Lighting page.
