Lake Cyrus, Hoover: homes, schools, parks and commute

Lake Cyrus is a planned community at Hoover’s western edge, south of John Hawkins Parkway (AL 150) and west of South Shades Crest Road, close to the Bessemer city line. OpenStreetMap maps it as a residential area, and Hoover’s comprehensive plan lists it among the planned developments behind west Hoover’s growth. It is mostly single-family homes, with rows of townhomes, around the neighborhood’s lakes and Brock’s Gap Intermediate School.

Where it is

In the school system’s parcel layer (2023 county tax records), 2,264 parcels carry Lake Cyrus in their subdivision name, in more than 20 sectors. 2,063 are inside Hoover, 194 are in the City of Bessemer and seven are in unincorporated Jefferson County. All are in Jefferson County and almost all in ZIP code 35244. A Lake Cyrus address does not by itself mean a Hoover address: check the taxing city on the Jefferson County property portal.

The comprehensive plan’s table of approved development counted 148 single-family lots still to be built in Lake Cyrus as of March 30, 2019. Its project list includes widening AL 150 to five lanes from Shades Crest Road to Lake Cyrus Boulevard, with no date.

Schools

Scores are each school’s overall score on the 2025 state report card (the 2024-25 school year).

Every Hoover parcel in Lake Cyrus falls in the South Shades Crest and Brock’s Gap zone on the district’s map. The Bessemer parcels are not on the Hoover map. The typical home value in ZIP code 35244 was $477,594 in September 2026, up 2.9% from $464,362 in September 2025, according to the Zillow Home Value Index. The index is a modeled typical value for the middle third of homes, not a sale price. ZIP 35244 also covers Riverchase, Trace Crossings and Blackridge, so it is not a Lake Cyrus figure alone. Parks and trails

The comprehensive plan lists Brock’s Gap, Lake Cyrus and Deer Valley among the communities on Hoover’s west side that were far from a city park in 2019, and notes that some planned communities have their own private open space. The nearest park on the city’s list is Russet Woods Park, 105 Top O’ Tree Lane off South Shades Crest Road: 1.3 acres with a playground, a pavilion and a walking trail, according to the city’s park page.

The plan also describes the historic Brock’s Gap railroad cut nearby: picked in 1858 as the route over Shades Mountain for the South and North Railroad, it was blasted and dug by hand before the Civil War. More in our parks and trails guide.

Getting around

• Interstates: I-459 exit 6 (Morgan Road) is about 2.9 miles by road from the middle of the area, and exit 10 (AL 150) about 3.2 miles.
• City Hall: about 7 miles by road to 100 Municipal Lane.
• Airport: about 22 miles by road to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. Distances are measured on the OpenStreetMap road network with the OSRM routing engine; they are distances, not drive times.
• Buses: no MAX Transit route serves Lake Cyrus; the nearest stops in MAX Transit’s schedule data are in Bessemer, more than 4 miles away.

The comprehensive plan says South Shades Crest Road and Morgan Road carry heavy commuter traffic and that large subdivisions depend on South Shades Crest Road for access. The planned I-459 Exit 9 interchange, which the city’s capital projects list shows set for bidding in 2027, would give the area a second route. More in our getting around guide.
